ABSTRACT

I am a German solution focused (SF) consultant and coach working in Shanghai. I studied Chinese language and business administration and have been living in China on and off since the 1980s. Fascinated with the SF ideas and coaching applications in business, I set up a company in 2007 in organisational development and coaching in Shanghai. Fluent in Chinese, I wanted to introduce SF thinking and transfer the SF language into Chinese. As a result I encountered diffi culties with the misunderstanding of coaching embedded in the Chinese language and a realisation that a new and appropriate identity must be created. In this chapter I will discuss my journey through this process and the importance of appropriate translation, assumptions and expectations in coaching and consulting in China. It is my passion and mission to spread the SF ideas in China.
