ABSTRACT

This conclusion brings together the findings and ideas from the preceding chapters of this book. The book offers an interconnected picture of agents, relationships, motivations and feedback mechanisms in the understanding of community filmmaking and diversity. It gives potential to provide impetus for subsequent work on the rich community filmmaking traditions of Latin America, Africa and elsewhere. The book argues that community filmmaking can play a key role in contributing to the cultural mapping of intangible community assets and, as such, contribute to local planning and development processes in a more formal way. While mainstream film would benefit from some of the innovative approaches, alternative content and approaches to diversity that are apparent in community film, community filmmaking would also benefit from platforms and opportunities to reach new audiences. Community filmmaking covers a wide range of practices. However, more research is needed to explore the connection between community filmmaking projects and the mainstream film sector.
