ABSTRACT

The Australian feature film 52 Tuesdays, developed and part-funded by the South Australian Film Corporation opened theatrically in 2013. The film is about a group of people living in the same place, but the problems they face of how to live authentically are ones common to many other people throughout the Western world. This chapter examines 52 Tuesdays as a case study of cinema that both draws upon and creates local and global networks. The film and the online companion project engage with both local and global individuals and community groups who are participants in the production process and/or its world-wide audience. The success of 52 Tuesdays as an example of global community cinema lies in definition of community and its relation to commonality. The film's subject matter meant it was always going to be popular with LGBTQ communities, but the fact that it is now available in over 50 countries is verification that local communities are increasingly global communities.
