ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the place of moral education within history education. It does so in the context of a recent revival of interest in character education in the English educational policy landscape. The chapter suggests that engaging in the complexities of developing the moral outcomes of history education is an important concern of the subject and as such identifies some important considerations for history teachers raised by character education. The chapter explores the key aspects of debates concerning the place of moral education and history education, and discusses some issues raised for history teachers by the recent policy focus on character education in England. While the chapter takes the English context as its focus, the issues and ideas discussed are of interest and importance in a range of jurisdictions given the persistence of contested political and moral debates regarding the form of history taught in schools.
