ABSTRACT

This chapter explores why educational visits are a vital part of historical education and how to embed visits in a history programme of study. It guides the planning of safe and successful educational visits. On-site learning via an educational visit can support students to 'know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative' and also 'gain and deploy a historically grounded understanding of abstract terms'. History is greater than the sum of its parts and educational visits provide excellent opportunities to enable students to see how the component parts of the discipline fit together. Successful visits require clear educational outcomes. Risk assessment and management are at the heart of the organisation of safe educational visits. Organising visits can appear daunting, especially for younger colleagues, or in schools where there is not a long tradition of taking students out of the classroom.
