ABSTRACT

This chapter explores to set the scene in which the lesson in focus in the book takes place. It also describes pertinent aspects of the school, Mr. T and his Grade 11 class, before moving on to describe his lesson on quadratic inequalities and the curricular setting of the topic in South African schooling. The Wits Maths Connect Secondary Project (WMCS) is a research and development project that, in its first 5-year phase, aimed at improving the teaching and learning of mathematics in 10 selected schools in one district in Gauteng, South Africa. As noted, School M is a no-fee-paying township school, categorized by the National Department of Basic Education (DBE) as quintile 2. The chapter explains about the learners who bring a range of first languages to class a function of migration to the city from more rural northern and southeastern provinces of the country, as well as from other southern African countries.
