ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the characteristics of children's musical play with the purpose of enabling teachers to incorporate some of the characteristics into class activities. It also explores Children's ownership and curation of repertoire; Creativity as an integral component of musical play; Mediated learning in musical play; Communities of practice in the playground; Holistic and multimodal learning at varying levels of difficulty; Development of intercultural exchange, engagement and social connection. The musical play of children of primary school age occurs in multiple settings and includes a great variety of activities. In the classroom the teacher is responsible for the planning and programming of musical activities. Therefore, the teacher usually determines what music will be sung, played, listened to or created and therefore displays ownership of the repertoire. However, children also appropriate material from the media that may be intended for an adult or teenage market, thereby developing or reinforcing musical preferences and performance skills within this process.
