ABSTRACT

This chapter explores creating collaborative spaces for performance communities; Inclusive spaces for engaging all children as creative performers; Spaces for celebrating collaborative performances; Moving from rehearsal through to performance spaces. Alphabet Dance is a collaborative music, dance and literacy project that takes place over a series of consecutive teaching occasions. Consider Building a collaborative space provides a platform for team building – creative choice – whereby enabling and communicating empathic relationships come from what you bring into the collaborative performance space and what you take away from coming together to collaboratively perform music. Having known the cultural occasion for song preparation, learners generate lyrics that are appropriate to the songs becoming appropriate to their function. Final performances from creative workshop processes do not have to have rhythms, melodies, harmonies, structure and notation, and they do not have to involve instruments, professional musicians and special venues.
