Self-determination in the Twenty-first Century

Definitions of self-determination vary across time and place; they also change in accord-

ance with the political culture of the case in question. Three main broad definitions of self-

determination define it as:

(1) A collective right of a defined ethnic, linguistic, cultural, or religious community to

create and administer their own state.
