ABSTRACT

Neri and the author saw each other for the first time on the occasion of a research seminar organised by Domenico Mario Nuti and Bob Rowthorn in the Faculty of Economics of the University of Cambridge in the spring of 1978. Neri was then a research student in Cambridge after he had studied under the supervision of Ian Steedman at the University of Manchester. In 1979 the author had been appointed to a chair in the economics department of the recently founded University of Bremen and had begun to invite major representatives of the classical approach to the theory of value and distribution, including several of the aforementioned scholars. Whilst in New York in August 1991, one of us contacted the American branch of Cambridge University Press to find out whether they would be interested in publishing the book. This brought us into contact with Scott Parris, the economics editor of the Press.
