ABSTRACT
Judicial elections fascinate observers for many reasons, but what ultimately matters most about them is whether and how they affect courts’ outputs. Through their decisions and opinions, state supreme courts shape policy in significant ways on a wide range of issues. To the extent that elections influence those courts’ actions, the elections have a real impact on the lives and work of the people and organizations governed by the law.1
