ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on characteristics of internet and social media channels to help determine a photographer's choice of which to use and how to use them. In the ever-expanding world of online media, the roles of the internet, social media, and photographic communication are forever linked. Social media provide ways for a photographer to build an audience of viewers, to share work, and, potentially, to generate financial support for a photo or video project. In addition to sites like Facebook and Twitter, YouTube and Vimeo are the places to be seen for photographers who work with video. Social media are digital channels that allow users to create and share content and to build networks with other users. Social media reflect the evolution of online communication that began with websites in the 1990s. Websites and blogs may be viewed more often on computer screens, but social media are often viewed on the go through mobile devices like tablets and smartphones.
