ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explain how the wider adoption of digital tools, stimulated by Building Information Modelling (BIM), will transform the business operation of buildings. BIM is beginning to change the way buildings look, the ways in which they are designed and built and the way they function. The narrowest and commonest understanding of BIM is first that it is a 3D model used for design and visualisation purposes. Although BIM is the most obvious and promoted application of digital revolution for clients, it is only the starting point of a potentially momentous and profitable transformation of their complete business or service provision. It is most important for clients to realise that a digital transformation is happening around them and the most successful businesses of the future are likely to be those that maximise their current investment to exploit these undeveloped possibilities. Digital technologies such as BIM can bring more choice and greater convenience in using building spaces.
