ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a study where a client successfully took the lead in getting Building Information Modelling (BIM) implemented in the construction sector on a national level. It outlines some key issues on innovation, innovation implementation and diffusion in the construction sector. Construction is seen as lagging behind many other industrial sectors. There is evidence that the construction industry does address difficult and complex problems, but in ways different from other industries. Clients are, as stated earlier, an important stakeholder for innovation in the construction sector. The chapter illustrates briefly the role the client organisation played for innovation in construction in its country. It also presents the path the client organisation took to introduce BIM in the national construction industry and the result it generated. The approach the client organisation took for implementing BIM meant it had a number of advantages compared to simply letting the rest of the industry take charge.
