ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role and function of a relatively new phenomenon: client associations in the construction sector. It aims to provide insights into how national client associations seek to contribute to the professionalisation of the construction client role in the dynamic construction environment. The chapter discusses the different aspects of the day-to-day work construction clients engage in and that client associations seek to professionalise: aspects of professionalism with regards to the procuring activities related to buildings and infrastructure. It presents the similarities and differences between national construction client associations with regard to how they seek to professionalise client roles. Client associations are concerned with professionalisation, increasing levels of knowledge and expertise, and gaining influence for clients. Client associations are usually initiated on the basis of a tight-knit group of high-level people from some of the large member organisations.
