ABSTRACT

This chapter examines different types of online activities fit a dialogic or interactive framework of mediated communication. It presents future directions of strategic communication research on social communication that happens online. The field of strategic communication has emphasized a dialogic approach toward understanding attitude formation. Informal discussions about important social issues are the spontaneous interactions that occur among friends, family, or colleagues, and even strangers. The advancement of publishing platforms provided by the Internet, such as blogs, online video sites, and social media sites that are accessible by anyone with the most basic technical know-how has led to a proliferation of user-generated media. The Internet provides a range of ways to seek out and obtain information, with the predominant information-seeking platform being Google. Several scholars have expressed concern over the polarizing and isolating nature of Internet communication on society.
