ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses concepts found within the literature review relating to classical leadership in general and discusses their relevance to leadership within the police organization. In the recent literature relating to 'classical' leadership there have been four main 'generations' of theory identified as Trait, Behavioral, Contingency, and Transformational Theories. The model can be categorized as having four styles categorized as: Concern for Task; Concern for People; Directive Leadership; and Participative Leadership. To support Hersey's and Blanchard's argument they identified four different leadership styles that could be drawn upon to deal with contrasting situations which they listed as: Telling; Selling; Participating; and Delegating. It is apparent that when men and women are asked to define each other's characteristics and leadership qualities, significant patterns emerge. One important aspect relating to both management and leadership is that of the 'canteen culture', and its influence upon both police and the public they serve.
