ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines several areas in which sexual assault victims require assistance. It discusses the medical, psychological, and economic needs of victims, the systems that currently exist to provide support, such as the criminal justice system and rape crisis centers, and recommendations for improving services. The chapter addresses a particular arena in which sexual victimization has received a great deal of attention—the university. Rather than focusing on reducing victimization on college campuses, it examines the needs of college students who have been victimized and considers the ways in which universities can provide aid to victims. A majority of the efforts on helping sexual assault victims has taken on a feminist viewpoint, and therefore resources for victims tend to focus on female issues. As a result, less is known about how to help men who have experienced sexual assault. The chapter discusses some consequences of victimization that are unique to men and the implications of these consequences for service providers.
