ABSTRACT

There has been a shift away from holding teachers responsible for their students’ second-language (L2) learning. Rather, students have been increasingly entrusted with responsibility in the management of their language learning, a process that starts with becoming more aware of their preferred learning styles and the language learner strategies that they use. In this chapter, the inevitable intertwining of these notions is explained and the origin and evolution of the main theoretical concepts and research interests in this area are discussed. Likewise, the instruments that lead learners to become aware of the full range of learning styles and identify their overall learning style preferences are described. Consequently, learners will be able to consciously choose and operationalize the strategies that best suit them, and adopt others in order to optimize their learning and use the L2 at any proficiency level and for different tasks. The factors that play a role in the learners’ selection of language strategies are also identified. Finally, a number of considerations, suggestions, and resources for teachers are provided with the purpose of enabling them to conduct strategy instruction in the teaching environment.
