ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses text structure strategies in Intelligent Tutoring of the Structure Strategy (ITSS) for increasing reading comprehension. It describes the ITSS system. The chapter highlights a number of randomized studies demonstrating strong evidence for using ITSS in classrooms. The chapter explains how teachers can use and integrate the ITSS system within their classrooms. ITSS is not meant to replace reading or language arts instruction in classrooms; instead, ITSS can help teachers provide their students with a powerful approach to reading nonfiction through adaptive, individualized structure strategy instruction to meet students' particular needs. Many instructional programs to improve comprehension focus on background knowledge, vocabulary, summarization, inferences, elaboration, and text structure. With the introduction of the Common Core State Standards to over 40 states, instruction about text structure has received more attention. The chapter describes short summary of recent adaptations and limitations of the ITSS system.
