ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an intelligent tutoring system called TuinLEC designed to teach basic task-oriented reading skills to young adolescents following the framework developed by the Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) to assess reading literacy skills. It explains the PISA framework of reading literacy to clarify what it mean by task-oriented reading skills. The core of task-oriented reading is making decisions on the part of the reader that guide their behavior throughout the whole process of reading. The chapter explains the need for a technology capable of recording all these decisions and providing appropriate feedback. It provides an overview of TuinLEC, provides some evidence of TuinLEC's effectiveness, and describes how it can be integrated into the classroom. TuinLEC has been designed for students who speak Spanish as a first language. The chapter focuses on the current limitations and future directions of the system.
