ABSTRACT

The processes consist of a mixture of coding, repurposed commercial phone apps, and open-source mapping tools using a methodology that can be replicated for future use. GPS-enabled smartphones and tablets and various open-source mapping technologies to facilitate the collection, management, and visualization of the data have been used over the past several years to overcome the limitations presented from analog methods and to allow for digital crowdsourcing methods to be implemented. In the initial sharing method, users emailed the GPS files to a project team member, who would then process the file and add it to the project database. A solution is to identify what gaps exist in the available software and to determine if multiple applications could be utilized together to meet the needs of the project. The coding necessary for this part of the project was minimal and made use of existing classes and functions shared by other developers on GitHub to help parse and clean the data.
