ABSTRACT

The sensors will often come with a source code library that greatly facilitates the programming necessary to read the values from the sensor in question. Therefore going from one sensor to a combination of sensors and their interconnection becomes a trivial programming task, often requiring only the customization of values and example code. The toolmaking process has been enabled through various recent developments, notably open-source coding, hardware production, WYSIWYG/nodal interfaces, cloud connectivity, bandwidth and standardization. Digital toolmaking can be at once a methodology to describe a process applied in a professional context as well as a pedagogical method where students learn problem-solving through the creation of novel software and hardware tools. The relatively young discipline of landscape architecture has been fundamentally shaped by its tools and typical means of representation, which have not evolved markedly since its inception, only developing substantially in the last decade.
