ABSTRACT

Historical and current data suggest that academic dishonesty exists among college students. Universities responded to academic dishonesty by creating their own due process procedures for students rather than turning the acts of deviance over to criminal courts. In the contemporary era, online enrollment is growing faster than traditional enrollment. Cyber teaching, online learning management systems, social media, and video interactive software all are examples of media that can also be used for online education. J. Underwood and A. Szabo find academic dishonesty to be more prevalent among males and among those who were savvy internet users. The two most common issues regarding academic integrity are issues of plagiarism and cheating in an online exam. In this chapter, the authors have surveyed university students with the goal of gaining greater understanding of the many different dimensions of academic integrity violations among criminal justice majors.
