ABSTRACT

This chapter examines information technology (IT) management consulting and how the IT industry and IT consulting have evolved to create essential components of the consulting profession and global economy. To better appreciate how IT has become so pervasive and critical to the service offerings and service delivery capabilities of a management consulting firm, it's useful to first understand how what was once called "scientific data processing" moved to become data processing, to Management Information Systems (MIS) and IT. IT has now evolved into the digital economy, the digital enterprise, the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-business, cyber-life and to Technology Enabled Life (TEL). In advanced economies, such the United States, IT expenditures are a significant component of GDP and private and public sector spending. Determining the size of the IT management consulting profession and industry is exceedingly difficult. The enormity of the IT industry creates as equally large and complex IT consulting opportunities.
