ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a personal narrative cataloguing author's motivation for attending an Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) for doctoral study, overall matriculation experiences, and how those experiences have shaped the author career as a higher education practitioner and scholar. To be honest, prior to attending Morgan State University, the author had never set foot on an HBCU campus. Through doctoral studies at Morgan State University, author strengthened the critical thinking competencies and began to challenge others' truth. That aspect is the issue of access and participation in higher education for racial and ethnic minorities, particularly the process and journey associated with graduate education for Black students and the role of historically black colleges and universities or HBCUs. Even when HBCU critics make generalizations based on empirical research, the author able to accurately question their research methodology and heavy reliance on traditional measures of academic excellence.
