ABSTRACT

This personal evaluation of German geography and German geographers since the beginning of the century, does not purport to be an exhaustive study of German geographic thought, such as Richard Hartshorne made in his book, The Nature of Geography. Time available for the study did not permit careful reading of the huge volume of geographic material published in Germany during the period, while the space allotted allows only a rather brief general discussion. The author spent three semesters (1915–16) in the department of geography of Berlin University working under Albrecht Penck, and visited Germany many times afterwards while always trying to keep up with German publications.
