ABSTRACT

Two different circumstances have combined to make the first half of this century a period of great importance in the history and development of geography in Czechoslovakia: the universal progress of geography during this period gave from the very opening of the century a new impetus to geography also in Czechoslovakia. This impetus was immeasurably strengthened by the restoration of national independence in 1918 and by the rise of the free and independent Republic of Czechoslovakia. New tasks were set them, new responsibilities, new opportunities came crowding in upon them, new spheres of work opened up to Czechoslovak geographers.
