ABSTRACT

The definitions of security and defence have undergone significant changes. While often treated as two separate spheres of action during the Cold War, this chapter shows that defence and security are increasingly discussed in intertwined ways. Hence one can speak of defence-as-security. A myriad of actors such as states, international organizations, but also non-state actors have redefined what needs to be saved and defended. This chapter shows that to take defence studies seriously, we need to understand what kind of actors see as worthwhile saving and defending and with what means.
