ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a range of key topics and case studies found in the field of Professional Military Education (PME), as well as considering future trends which may impact upon the study of military education. It includes discussions on academic rigour, critical thinking, civil–military relations, curriculum development, educational reform, jointness, elites, diversity, democratization, specialization, soft power, defence engagement, inter-cultural communications and technology in military education. It also reviews educational texts by Vegetius, Carl von Clausewitz, Emory Upton, Morris Janowitz, John Masland and Laurence Radway, Martin Van Creveld, and John Cope.
