ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the extent to which nature of science (NOS) content is portrayed in ninth grade Lebanese science textbooks, and proposes a set of recommendations to guide future textbook development. It describes the context of the study, review NOS studies focused on textbooks, present the analytical framework and methodology, followed by the findings, conclusion, and implications. The chapter focuses on the following research question: What NOS concepts, if any, are addressed in the textbooks, and which ones are not? It examines the extent to which all categories of NOS ideas, deemed worthy of inclusion in a science curriculum, are addressed in the official ninth grade Lebanese textbooks. Reliability was established through inter-rater agreement at the beginning of textbook analysis and checked again at the end of the analysis. The chapter describes the historical development of the atomic model from the Greeks to the modern atomic model.
