ABSTRACT

Remote Studio is a semester long immersion education program offered to undergraduate and graduate students located in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. With Remote Studio's commitment to community and environment the authors could provide a useful "thank you" to an organic farm through the semester's design/build project while also helping the students understand the value of the food produced by these farmers and their necessity to the future of a healthy planet. All Remote Studio projects are located in the rural to wildland interface to help students develop first-hand sensitivity to the landscape, learn to recognize specific ecological conditions and gain experience designing with place in mind. For the Cloud Nine project students spent a full day at the farm learning about the concepts of permaculture that support the organic farming practices. Typically, the Remote Studio projects are public sector projects in response to an aspect of Artemis Institute's mission to help people gain awareness of the relationship between nature and culture.
