ABSTRACT

The relationship between the eye, the hand, and the horizon, places us in the vastness of the earth's inner-atmosphere between land, ocean, and sky. These relationships shape our understanding of time and space. Construction is a marker of time. Patches tell specific stories and express the passage of time and wear. For spirit to exist, a story must be told. In order to define the quality of an object made with the hand, a distinction must be made. In simple terms, the quality of an object results from the relationship between the material, the tool, and the maker. A brick is designed for the hand and human's capacity to lift and set. The dimensions of a brick are derived to maximize efficiency. This efficiency is a direct result of the human hand. A building material designed for the hand, by definition, contains a human element.
