ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the role of non- European Union (EU) countries in establishing and maintaining the EU's regime of migration controls. It examines the responses of the EU's eastern neighbouring countries to the EU's pressure concerning the prevention and control of unregulated migration towards its territory. The chapter evaluates the cumulative effect of "Europe" on the cases under study in the area of international migration management where the activities and ways of doing things are perceived by local elites and expert communities as associated with "European" experiences, traditions and practices. It analyses the effects of the EU's policy of the externalization of migration management on the international migration governance, followed by the examination of factors that determine the EU/third country migration co-operation. The chapter analyses the consequences of the EU's migration diplomacy for the case studies under consideration. It evaluates the institutionalization of the readmission mechanism in Europe.
