ABSTRACT

Relativity theory tells us that what appears as simultaneous events from one frame of reference may be seen from another perspective as two events occurring at different moments. As Einstein theorized, ‘The past, present and future are only illusions, even if stubborn ones’. What gives rise to the experience of time is our perception of change. Connected with this perception of change is the second law of thermo-dynamics, the law of entropy, which states that matter becomes more disorganised over time. The movie Groundhog Day presents the story in the straightforward style of modern Hollywood films, but the conventional narrative is compromised by the way in which it shows the main character, Phil Connors, repeating the same day’s events time, after time, after time. Watching this film, we are given an opportunity to see what life might be like having a different experience of time.
