ABSTRACT

Toddlerhood is a critical time for providing counseling services to toddlers at risk for emotional, behavioral, and developmental delays. In this chapter, a conceptual framework as well as treatment guidelines for working with toddlers and their families in counseling are outlined. The chapter focuses on the goals of treatment, primarily the strengthening of co-regulatory and attachment relationships, as well as methods for supporting attachment and self-regulation in families through counseling. Normative and atypical development across domains are contextualized for the counseling profession and practical guidelines for setting up playrooms, planning sessions, and supporting regulation during session are provided along with extensive resources to support counselor growth and development.
