ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the term "tele-behavioral health (TBH)", which encompasses all specialties that deliver behavioral healthcare services. It outlines the core aspects of TBH practice within the military. The chapter focuses on the use of TBH services within the US Army. The use of TBH requires unique ethical and legal considerations beyond those routinely required to perform clinical care. TBH is the delivery of behavioral health services via technological means such as videoconferencing. The American Psychological Association (APA) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) along with the Association of Social Work Boards provide several recommendations within their published guidelines specific to the complex issues related to TBH use. Provider anxiety related to the use of TBH is likely to occur just as it would with the use of any other new delivery method or treatment modality. Many TBH operations follow the "hub-and-spoke" model, where providers are aggregated in one place and deliver services to outlying military installations.
