ABSTRACT

Spirituality is not often a component of the discussion in the career development literature on balancing work and personal concerns. Typically the discussion focuses on gender differences in career concerns (e.g., Gati, Osipow, & Givon, 1995; Rowe & Snizek, 1995), or the conflict between work and family issues (e.g., Mackey, 1995), or the spillover that occurs between disparate aspects of one’s life (e.g., Hyde, Klein, Essex, & Clark, 1995). Developing one’s spiritual self takes an initial investment of time and energy and an ongoing time commitment to continue that development. When work is all-consuming there is clearly little time for anything else, whether those other aspects involve relationships, family, leisure, or spirituality.
