ABSTRACT

The quest for self-knowledge brought the ancient Greeks to the Pythia of Apollo. Her carved emblem, “know thyself,” drew people to this place of mystery. At Delphi, on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, at the Earth’s center, Greeks sought to divine life’s meaning. In cosmopolitan Athens, however, the Greeks turned to the goddess of wisdom, Athena, and these lovers of wisdom sought understanding. Delphi now stand in ruins, but philosophy has reached far beyond Athens.
