ABSTRACT

Growing up a girl in the 1950s, the author's destiny was to play hopscotch and to jump rope. Baseball instruction also became part of the physical education program at most of the schools. She was billed as the Queen of Baseball. In later years, Murphy liked to boast that she had played first base for the American All-Stars against the Red Sox in a charity game at Fenway Park in 1922. It was not until 1945 that it was officially called the Base Ball League or the All-American Girls Baseball League (AAGBL). Every attempt was made to highlight the women's baseball skills. It was to be another twenty-seven years before another professional women's baseball team was formed. For example, in 1994, it was reported that Borders was the first woman to pitch in a college baseball game. Her comments are reminiscent of Jackie Mitchells in 1931.
