ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a review of residential energy demand in Asia since 1990. It presents a regional overview, followed by a sub-regional discussion covering east, west, south and south-east Asia. A brief review of residential energy outlook is also provided. The chapter highlights the dependence on biomass in East, South and South-east Asia and significant regional variation in demand pattern. Energy use per person remains lowest in the south and highest in the west. Electricity use is rapidly growing and the outlook suggests an intensification of electricity demand in the region. The residential energy demand is likely to grow at a faster rate, varying between 2.4% per year to 3.2% per year. East Asian dominance will continue but South Asia is likely to grow faster due to faster demand growth in India.
