ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a discussion between Dr. Orlob, Dr. Iackey, Dr.Kneese, Dr. DiToro, and Dr. Spofford on ecological modeling. According to Dr. Orlob, one of the problems for professionals interested in some of the intricate details of ecologic modeling is that they are not sure what, from the broader management context, might be the level of reliability required of the finished product. Dr. DiToro wonders about the existence of the ecological models that can make optimizing calculations. There is no inverse theory, so that even if one could say how accurately he/she needed to know the responses, there is no theory that tells about the kinds of precision and accuracies needed in our formulations. Dr. Spofford wishes to know what it is that is holding up the development of ecological models useful in making water quality management decisions.
