ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the current state of affairs regarding time management, identifies the impact on student lives as well as misperceptions, and offers strategies for students, faculty and administrators. Effective time management strategies increase academic performance and are frequently suggested by academic assistance personnel as aids to enhance achievement for college students. Helping first-generation students to understand the relationship of time to academic pursuits and how the use of time may be different from past academic settings may provide opportunities to address the discrepancy between the use of time and indicators of academic success. The chapter talks about five recommended time management priorities for creating a balanced, health-promoting and sustainable schedule: sleep, meals, classes, academic prep and work. Students, including first-generation students, tend to approach time allocations for post-secondary study based on the time they perceive as being available rather than considering the amount of time that is necessary to complete the work and master subjects.
