ABSTRACT

Research findings generated through the National Student Financial Wellness Study show that substantial work remains to be done with educating students around their finances. In line with the issue of student finances being a campus wide issue, an environmental approach is essential; this utilizes all higher education personnel as front-line ambassadors for financial wellness. Financial education programs began as extensions of academic units, specifically those academic programs charged with producing students trained in the consumer sciences and individuals who were interested in pursuing the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) route. Program planners need to make sure that the appropriate level of service is provided and that programs are developed in an effective manner that assist students throughout the campus community. Institutions are also looking to integrate mandatory financial literacy programs into specific co-curricular programs including bridge programs, scholar programs/learning communities and student organizations.
