ABSTRACT

People come to therapy for a multitude of reasons. These include: symptom removal or reduction, repairing of internal emotional wounds, and interpersonal relationship repair. Some corrective interventions with clients whose significant authority figures were intrusive include the following. The therapist will process this with the 'mirror' and the rest of the group about what it was like for them and what feelings emerged. Therapist acknowledges the client's need for space, which could represent safety that the individual who has been intruded upon needs. Although many therapists' style is to be less directive, if it is the intention to create significant healing experiences, then the author believe it is useful to take therapeutic risks with the clients. The therapist's main focus should be on the therapeutic relationship and the techniques are only used to enhance the healing nature of that relationship This type of treatment would not be clinically appropriate for clients with severe personality disorders and /or lower emotional functioning.
