ABSTRACT

This chapter describes two main groups: a general positive ethos towards education and learning in the family, and targeted practices of support in the schooling of children. It forwards five important goals for educational decision-makers with regard to the relationship between schools and immigrant families and communities: Developing a proper knowledge among the school staff on the multi-dimensionality of the experience and trajectory of immigrant families. Being open to a variety of models of relationship with the parents. Granting a central role to issues linked to equity and school success within strategies aiming at fostering school/family/community relationships. Benefiting fully from the resources available in the wider community. Implementing initiatives supporting the transformation of attitudes and practices within schools. The partnership model of collaboration is characterized by mutual recognition and a relationship of equality. The mission of educating, socializing and instructing is shared between the school and the family, turning them into partners.
