ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the message of a photograph that was considered to be good or liked by the photographer. In order to do this, a collection of photographs, all taken by auto-rickshaw drivers in Indian cities, was analysed by studying the photograph's composition. The photographs were taken during an exchange programme between students from Germany and India. The project was realized thanks to the support of students from Bangalore and Mumbai. The drivers took photographs of places that are almost opposite to their daily work environment. During the time the participants of the project went to the places they had chosen for their photographs most of them talked about their working conditions, their situation at home or their families. With the pictures analysed so far it is apparent that the drivers favoured photographs with a clear, unambiguous expression; pictures which point out one thing or place precisely, instead of showing an area vague or unclear.
