ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on research about the senses and office-related studies to demonstrate how buildings can be designed to be conducive to a positive multi-sensory experience. It looks at the workplace in order to design a productive workplace, it is essential to consider how the environment is making us feel, behave and act within it. As the workplace continues to evolve, the case is made for a sensory palette framework to drive a systems approach to building service design, enabling the integration of the multi-modal sensory relationship of people to their environment. The development of more creative and interpersonal skillsets such as persuasion, cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence and teaching others will rise by 2020, according to a study by the World Economic Forum. Consideration of multi-sensory stimuli within workplace design can help create environments conducive to the enhancement and facilitation of these attributes.
