ABSTRACT

Problems of drinking water quality, and consequently drinking water policy, are of great importance in Europe, especially in connection with the heavily polluted Rhine river, which supplies raw water for about 10 to 15 million people in Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands. The extent of pollution is demonstrated in figure 5-1, which shows the results of gas chromatographic and mass spectroscopic measurements of substances removed by means of an activated carbon filter which treats Rhine water after ground passage through the river banks.
