ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with quantum of child labour in South Asia and countries laws followed in South Asia. It shows a model of how a country's law combats child labour. In the era of globalization and economic liberalization, the state has reduced its responsibility from many areas, and consequently some of these areas of responsibility have moved away to the corporate sector. Among South Asia countries, Sri Lanka is the only one which has ratified all International Labour Organization (ILO) Conventions related to combating child labour. The child labour law of South Asia passes on the responsibility of combating child labour from society or nation to parents. However, due to poverty, parental income in South Asia is not sufficient to meet children's needs. Therefore, rather than pass on the responsibility from the nation to parents, it should be collectively carried out by all three because children are the assets.
